Win Free Kilo Entry – FOR A YEAR! Our Summer Survey

Screen Shot 2015-07-09 at 12.59.13

We like to think that we’re doing a pretty good job over at Vintage Kilo HQ, but as we all know, complacency is never chic! During our quieter summer season, kilo events manager Jenessa has been beavering away on lots of new ideas and innovations for the next season of vintage kilo sales, but we need YOUR help – with an added little prize giving of course!

Put simply, we want to know what you love best about The Vintage Kilo Sale, and what you’d like to see improved. We’ve made it super easy for you to show us your thoughts – simply full in our survey here.

As an extra little incentive, everybody who fills in the survey (and remembers to enter their email address in the final box) will be entered into a prize draw to win FREE ENTRY for them and a friend for ONE FULL YEAR of kilo sales, plus one free kilo each at their first event of choice. Don’t say we’re not good to you!

For those not in the know, The Vintage Kilo Sale is the younger sister of Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair, with a fun rummage twist. Established in 2009, we stock clothing from the 1960-1990s on rails and in large tubs, but nothing is individually priced – instead, you simply grab the items you like, pop them in one of our purple bags and then are charged by weight – £15 per kilo, which normally equates to 3-5 items. Bargain eh? For all our event info and updates visit us on facebook here.

Fest-Envy – Vintage Style at Glastonbury!

We’re heaving a collective sigh of jealousy at Judy HQ this week – we’re not off to Glastonbury! Although we have a very exciting summer of festival ahead of us with Beatherder and Festival No.6 (more info here!), we can’t help but lust for those rolling pilton hills and a line-up that reads like a who’s who of music industry.

In recent years, Glastonbury has also become synonymous with some of the world’s best street style. Vintage is a great option for festivalwear – it is often much more hardwearing than modern clothing, will make you stand out in a crowd and can be customised to your hearts content without breaking your budget. If you’re still hurriedly packing our bags before heading off to Somerset, take note from some of our favourite celebrity Glasto looks that can be easily achieved with a bit of vintage!

Golden Girls

paloma faith beyonce kate moss glastonbury fashionWhile looking as flawless as Paloma or Beyonce may seem a little unachievable after a few nights in a tent, glitter is an absolute must at Glastonbury. Lamé, sequin or lurex garment are easily found at vintage fairs and look great as a statement piece over darker shorts or tees, adding a little glamour to the muddy fields.

Earth Child

florence welch laura whitmore lana del rey glastonbury fashion3

With it’s hippy connotations and blissed-out vibes, Glastonbury is the perfect place to get your free love on. Florence, Laura and Lana display just a few of the ways to channel 60s/70s folklore – the key is all in the pattern. Pick one bold minidress, kimono or shirt in a floaty cotton for easy wearability and light packing – you’ll thank us later when you have much more space for all those tinned gins!

Simply Does It

emma watson ella eyre alexa chung glastonbury fashion2

if you don’t fancy going all out at Glastonbury, there are plenty of ways to dress simply while still making a nod to retro. Whether it’s a pretty 50s blouse like Emma’s, 70s leather ‘n’ breton combo like Alexa or 90s oversized tee and round sunnies like Ella, these looks are all maintenance but still make an impact. Just remember to add a pop of luxury – a gold chain, patterned belt or perhaps even a gorgeous vintage handbag like Alexa’s (a girl can dream…)

What outfits are you planning on rocking this festival season? Don’t forget to share your looks with us on instagram @judysvintagefair – we love sharing our favourites.

INTERVIEW: Elizabeth Sankey talks ‘Beyond Clueless’

Ever wish your life was like a 90s teen movie? A celebration of everything great about the decade of cinema, Beyond Clueless is a documentary like no other. Getting to the heart of boys, bleachers and pep rallies, the 2015 movie has made waves across independent cinema and looks set to continue it’s success having hit Netflix very recently.  It’s crowning moment? The soundtrack. We caught up with Elizabeth Sankey of nostalgia-loving duo Summer Camp, a band whose score brings the film to life…

Screen Shot 2015-06-17 at 10.48.39

Hi Elizabeth! Firstly, how did the job with Beyond Clueless come about? I understand you’ve been friends with director Charlie Lyne for quite some time…

Hey!  Yes we’ve known Charlie for years I used to try to get him to write for an online magazine I edited years ago, but he was already doing his own thing and being much better than anyone else.  Then we ended up living round the corner from each other and becoming proper real life friends. Jeremy (Elizabeth’s bandmate) and I both love him very much.

How have the 90s influenced your day-to-day music making in summer camp? What music were you listening to in the 90s?

In the 90s I think I was listening to whatever the bus driver chose to play on the school coach I had to ride for two hours a day.  There are a lot of pop songs from that period I hate but know all the lyrics too.  I loved Blur more than anything in the world, still do really.  As for influencing our music, I’m a very nostalgic person and I love looking at things from the past for inspiration.  Especially films and TV shows.  It’s the wonderful thing of those worlds looking like something you lived through and knew, but at the same time it’s total fantasy.  Also the fashion was so dope then.

If you could be any 90s character yourself, who would you be?

I think I would like to be a cross between Rayanne Graff and Angela Chase and Jeremy would be a cross between Jordan Catalano and Brian Krakow.

P9133561

Let’s talk fashion. You’ve created quite a name for yourself online for recreating famous outfits from decades past – who’s been the most fun to dress up as?

I loved every single dress up!  I always wanted to be an actress, and I’ve always been into clothes, so it’s kind of the perfect combination of that.  I liked dressing Jeremy up as Duckie from ‘Pretty In Pink’ as I think Duckie looked so incredible and I got to give Jeremy a quiff.  Dressing up as a character from ‘The Craft’ was also really fun, wearing black lipstick and a nose ring.  I like how different clothes make you feel different, I find it quite therapeutic to put something on and feel very much myself, but in a new way.  It’s deep.

What tips would you give people when looking to dress in full vintage, without ending up looking like they’re in fancy dress?

Oh man, in my 20s I only wore vintage, and it’s totally do-able but you have to commit.  I always find looking at photos of people, or characters in films and TV, really helpful.  Picking someone who looks a bit like you and is the same size and shape.  Then you can sort of piece together outfits based on that.  You won’t find exact copies obviously, but you can get the jist of it.  Also invest your money in good coats and jackets and get them dry cleaned.  You’ll wear them again the next year and they can just make the whole outfit feel special.  Also, pick fabrics like cotton, suede and denim that last longer, and look for details like embroidery. I’m so into embroidery at the moment. I also recommend getting good with a sewing machine. I used to buy loads of maxi dresses and turn them mini and so on.  And you can buy stuff that is too big for you and then take it in.

Where do you normally shop for your clothing?

I do all my shopping online these days.  I work from home so I’m always in and can get things delivered.  Plus I’m not a fan of changing rooms, I like to try stuff on in my own house.  However, when it comes to vintage I can spend hours in a shop rifling through everything, it’s always good on tour to look at the different shops and I have to say, Manchester is one of the best cities in the world for vintage.

So back to movie – why should people go watch it?

Beyond Clueless is smart, funny, beautiful and sexy – it’s the best teen film I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen them all. There are very exciting things planned for the film in the future but they’re all secret…

For more information on Beyond Clueless, check out their website here. To see what Elizabeth picked up when she came to our kilo sale, visit her blog here

Steal Their Style – Festival No.6 edition!

Keeping secrets has never been our forte, which is why we cannot wait any longer to share our latest news – we’re going to be pitching up in September at the wonderful Festival No. 6!!!

That’s right – we’ll be celebrating the end of the summer season with a whole marquee full of the best in vintage clothing and accessories traders, helping you enjoy your weekend in serious style.

If you haven’t heard of Festival No. 6, it’s an event like no other. Take the gorgeous backdrop of Portmeirion in North Wales, add a bunch of brilliant bands, arts and workshops, top off with a dash of artisan food and drink and then, for good measure, offer some luxury accommodation – what more could you want?

Here at Judy HQ there’s nothing we love more than the pairing of vintage fashion and music (and a cheeky gin or three), which makes this quaint and quirky festival pretty much our spiritual home! To get us all in the mood, we’ve picked out some of the acts we can’t wait to see, with some tips on how to channel their style for the summer season!

o-GRACE-JONES-facebook Grace Jones
Festival No. 6’s headliner and all-round style icon, Grace Jones’s influence stretches far and wide. While some of her crazier outfits might not be quite portaloo-proof, why not experiment with some diva-ish makeup? Grace Jones loves bright colours, and at a festival where anything goes, a loud yellow or blue eyeshadow is sure to help you stand out, 80s style.

Years___Years_new_20140625_2048x1365_01Years and Years
New kids on the block Years and Years have fast earnt a name for themselves as one of the biggest names in modern dance-pop, with a live show to match. While we love their songs ‘King’ and ‘Desire’, we’re more excited by their take on cheerful 90s fashion. Even better, it’s an easy look to recreate – simply throw on a cartoon print sweater or tee over some cut off shorts and add some chunky white trainers – but beware, they might get muddy!

stealing sheepStealing Sheep
Otherwordly and effervescent, Stealing Sheep make music that perfectly matches Festival No.6’s dreamlike setting, a mix of glittery synths and tribal drums. Their look is completely 70s – think floating dresses, waistcoats and clashing patterns. Top off with a good dose of facial glitter, and you’re good to go!

catfish_and_the_bottlemen2Catfish & The Bottlemen
Putting the cocky swagger back into rock’n’roll, Catfish & The Bottlemen seem set for every festival this summer. Their laidback 60s rocker look is low maintenance enough for the field and the tourbus, and can be adapted to suit men and women. Choose high necked striped tees, dark wash pinafores and skinny denim, and don’t even dare to forget your leather jacket and ankle boots – perfect for when the weather gets a little chillier in the evenings.

Will you be joining us at Festival No.6? Check out our events tab for all our upcoming city and festival dates – we;ll be adding more updates soon!

Au Revoir!!

Presenting our (retr)eau de toilette…

unnamedGreetings Vintage Fans,
Are you tired of living and breathing all things vintage without *actually*breathing the air? Do today’s modern-day scents and smells get a big boo from you? Are your nostrils itching for the nostalgia of a better time-gone-by? Oh boy, do we have news for you…
Brought to you by a team of retro researchers at a top UK Universtiy (and with help from yours truly), we’ve answered your sensory prayers. Available at all of our events for the foreseeable future, we give you: ‘The Affordable Vintage Air.’
A mere prototype (branding to be decided) of our new ‘eau de retro,’ we caught up with Fair Founder Judy on just why she was so on the nose; “Nowadays, we’ve got it too good,” she states, speaking from the laboratory. “The internet lets us replicate any piece of the past we desire; fashion houses provide the looks and touch, apps and video blare out the sound, but what about that most elusive of memories, what about the smell? (Literally)Sniffing out a gap in the market, lo the ‘Air’ was born.”
Coming in a plethora of scents, samples include: –
  • Grandma’s House
  • Bread-and-Dripping
  • Palma Violet
  • Sunday School
  • Local Boozer
  • Auntie’s Lacquer –  AND MORE!

All the wistfulness of going round to Grandma’s (without having to put in any face time).” Professor R. Etro, Mixologist at Judy HQ
